Earth Day Makes Impact at Capitol

Tallahassee community members took part in the global celebration of Earth Day’s 40th anniversary at the Capitol in true “green” fashion on Thursday, April 22. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection hosted the day of events that included a variety of recycling initiatives.

One in particular, a statewide plastic bag recycling awareness campaign called A Bag’s Life, is a collaborative effort between the Florida Retail Federation, American Chemistry Council and Florida Recycling Partnership.

“Several local governments in Florida were considering bag bans and taxes, and this demonstrated to us that we needed to educate consumers and policymakers in Florida about all of the opportunities retailers are providing to their customers to make responsible, environmentally sound bag decisions,” said Samantha Hunter Padgett, executive coordinator of the Florida Retail Federation Sustainability Council.

“For example, (stores are) making in-store recycling available, making reusable bags available, and providing incentives to reuse bags.
