"A Bag's Life" hopes to keep plastic bags out of landfills

(Bonnie Gonzalez) YNN Austin -- Next time you come across a plastic bag, remember the three R’s -- Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

"A Bag's Life" is the slogan for a cooperative effort between private and public organizations to keep plastic bags out of landfills.

Tuesday, the campaign launched a website along with an app to help people find one of nearly 1,800 drop-off locations for recycling the bags in Texas.

Ronnie Volkening with the Texas Retailers Association said it's all about using technology as a means of bringing awareness to the issue.

"It's a website driven program to educate the public about the uses of plastic bags and promoting the recycling of it by having a zip code directory where consumers can go onto abagslife.com and find the store nearest them to by putting in their zip code to the stores nearest them where they can bring their bags in to be recycled," Volkening said.

According to "A Bag's Life," this kind of recycling is on the rise. In 2008, more than 832 million pounds were recycled, an increase of almost 30 percent since 2005.
